Sawmill in Lassen is Swept By Fire With $50,000 Loss
September 27, 1948

The Whaley Lumber Company sawmill, 14 miles southeast of Susanville near Janesville, was destroyed by fire when sparks from the waste burner, whipped by a strong wind, touched off dry wood.

R. L. Beck, manager of the Long Beach firm, estimated the damage at between $50,000 and $60,000.

Two trucks and men from the state division of forestry and from the United States Forestry Service were dispatched to the scene Thursday but could do little more than keep the fire from spreading to adjoining property.

Manager Beck said a representative from Long Beach will arrive within a few days to discuss possible rebuilding. He also said he does not believe there was any insurance on the mill.
