September 29, 1973
The first women correctional officers reported for work on Wednesday at the California Conservation Center.
Shown arriving at the center, top photo, is Edda Perry, left, and Shirley Milner.
Below, Officer Mike Beard registers Edda Perry while Shirley Milner waits to sign in.
Both will receive five days of orientation before being assigned to regular correctional officer’s duties.
Prior to their employment at the Center, the two women received five weeks of training at the Academy, which qualified them under the Peace Officer’s Standards.
