LMUD Presents: This Day in Susanville History – September 9, 1925

The last vestige of a bygone era of horses and wagons, the Skadden livery stable (far left in the photo) was a landmark on Main Street before being torn down to build the Doyle Motors showroom.

Landmark Is Torn Down in Lassen County
September 9, 1925

The oldest remaining landmark on Main Street in Susanville is being dismantled to make way for a new garage.

The once famed Skadden livery barn, known through all Lassen County for the past thirty years, is being torn down today by its present owner, Mrs. A. Tate.

During the past two years the barn has been operated but only occasionally would a horse be ridden to town and find his way to the former horses’ home.

Some of the best buildings in Susanville are being erected in the same block as the barn and the new hotel is being erected across the street from this property.

The destruction of this frame building removes what is considered by the town authorities as a great fire menace in the central part of town.

The new garage will be taken up by one of the automobile agencies in Susanville. This is merely another instance where the automobile is taking the place of the horse.

Many interested spectators have watched the removal of the frame structure which has taken an interesting part in the history of Lassen County.
