Local Community Unites with Public Health Department for Back to School Bash

Lassen County’s Public Health Department and a wide range of local agencies hosted the second annual Back to School Bash, an event that provided essential resources to hundreds of local families and students as they prepare for the new school year. The event, held on Wednesday, August 6th, at the Lassen County Fairgrounds, brought together nearly 1,000 community members and provided support to 483 children.

A Day of Comprehensive Support
The Back to School Bash offered more than just school supplies. Attendees could access a variety of services, including free haircuts from local stylists at Catchin’ Dreams Beauty & Barber Shop, Salon Adore, and Hair Hunters.

The Lassen County Public Health Oral Health Program provided dental screenings, fluoride varnish treatments, and free hygiene supplies. The Lassen County Public Health Clinic also offered free immunizations to students.

Lassen County Family Solutions generously provided hotdogs, while beverages were donated by Western Nevada Supply, Diamond Mountain Casino & Hotel, and Grocery Outlet. Kona Ice treats, sponsored by the Susanville Indian Rancheria and the Lassen County Chamber of Commerce, were a special highlight.

For those in need of clothing, Threads of Love provided a selection of gently used items.

Community Partnership at its Best
The event’s success was a testament to the strong community support. In a statement, Lassen Public Health Director Brandon Rohrig said, “It was far beyond the scope of what just public health and LCOE could do. We handed out 483 backpacks, provided a meal, provided a treat, provided vaccines, provided oral health, provided gently used clothing, provided haircuts, and connected people to various community resources. It was a whole back-to-school event covering far more than supplies.”

Rohrig also highlighted the immense collaboration, noting that over 50 partners assisted in making the event possible. Among the many contributors, the Lassen County Office of Education donated 100 backpacks, with 50 of them fully stocked with supplies.

The event underscored the community’s collective commitment to student success and the power of local partnerships.
