Local Fourth Graders Step Back in Time for 2026 California History Day

The Lassen County Fairgrounds transformed into a living classroom last Thursday, March 26th, as the Lassen County Office of Education hosted their annual California History Day. More than 300 fourth-grade students from across the county gathered for a full day of interactive, hands-on learning designed to bring the state’s vibrant past to life.

Throughout the event, students moved through various engaging sessions that explored the foundational pillars of California’s heritage. The curriculum moved beyond textbooks, allowing children to dive into the worlds of ranching and agriculture, the high-stakes era of mining and the Gold Rush, and the significant contributions of women in history.

Students also learned about notable locations across the state and even tackled complex economic concepts like inflation through what the LCOE described as “age-appropriate, participatory activities.”

The success of the day relied heavily on a broad network of community support. Superintendent of Schools Patricia Gunderson expressed her sincere gratitude for the partners who helped create such a high-quality experience, noting that events like these are vital for helping students deepen their understanding of both local and state history.

The LCOE extended special thanks to the Lassen County Cattlewomen, CalFresh Healthy Living, and the Nataqua Parlor #152 of the Native Daughters of the Golden West for their historical expertise.

The event was further supported by the Lassen County Public Health department and the Lassen Community College Nursing Program, while student volunteers from the Lassen High School FBLA and FFA programs helped ensure the day ran smoothly for the younger participants. (LCOE Photos)
