Main Street Traffic Stop Leads to High-Speed Pursuit with Stolen Pickup

policeupdate3A high-speed pursuit through the streets of Susanville Monday evening ended after the suspect, driving a vehicle stolen in Sparks, Nevada, attempted to flee the truck on foot and was quickly taken into custody by Susanville City Police Officers.

According to Police Lieutenant Matt Wood the cross-town chase, which reached a maximum speed of 70 mph through residential neighborhoods, began after an officer attempted a traffic stop in the parking lot of the Travel Inn on Main Street.

The driver of the white GMC pickup, which had stolen license plates, failed to pull-over and a pursuit ensued through the northwest area of Susanville. The driver stopped the vehicle in the 900 block of Paiute Lane and was taken into custody after a short foot pursuit.

Subsequent investigation by officers revealed ammunition inside the stolen vehicle.

The driver, identified by police as 34 year-old Jessy Richards of Susanville, was booked into the Lassen County Jail on multiple charges including evading a peace officer with recklessness, possession of stolen license plates, possession of a stolen vehicle, being a felon in possession of ammunition and driving on a suspended license.

Richards was also arrested on two separate felony warrants out of Lassen County, one for commercial burglary and one for violating the conditions of his Post Released Community Supervision. Bail was set at $50,000 but Richards was held on the felony no bail warrant for the PRCS violation.

The chase covered approximately one mile, according to Wood’s report, and lasted around three minutes.

The case has been referred to the Lassen County District Attorney’s Office for prosecution.
