Margie’s Book Nook Seeks Community Support to Fix Leaky Roof, Save Books

Margie’s Book Nook, a beloved independent bookstore that has been a cornerstone of the Susanville community for decades, is facing a critical challenge: a leaky roof is threatening its continued operation and precious inventory. Owners Margie, Shelby, and David Teeter are reaching out to the Lassen County community and beyond for help.

“Over the past few winters, the Book Nook has sustained damage from storms and snow melt that can’t be kept up with, with a leaky roof,” Shelby Teeter explained in the GoFundMe post. “We’re reaching out to the Lassen-County-and-beyond community to help keep our independent bookstore operational and the inventory safe from additional water damage – save the books!”

The Teeters have been diligently working to revitalize the store and the Uptown Susanville area, exploring new avenues for sales. However, the rise of e-books, online shopping and now, damaged inventory due to the roof, has made it increasingly difficult to keep their doors open for the community.

“We’ve been working hard to make updates, hoping to bring some new life to our store and the Uptown Susanville area,” the Teeters explained.

“We are proud to be a hub for the community, sell tickets for local events, place special book orders for our customers, and have especially loved helping the local library by hosting its weekly children’s story time and providing every child with a free used book each week during the library renovations.”

Now, it’s the Book Nook that needs a little support. “We are turning to you, the amazing indie bookstore and literary-loving community we have come to cherish over the past 40 years, to help us make the necessary roof replacement a reality and keep the Book Nook operational for years to come!”

Every cent donated will directly contribute to building maintenance and replacing fixtures damaged by storms and water.

“Please consider donating to our bookstore and know that every cent matters! Donations will be used for costs associated with building maintenance and fixtures in need of replacement from storm and water damages,” the Teeters emphasized. “We will continue to think outside of the box to raise funds for our needed repairs, but appreciate anything anyone can give to help us reach our goals and keep our uptown bookstore open!”

As a token of their gratitude, everyone who donates will be invited to a celebratory event and receive in-store recognition. The Teeters are also asking the community to spread the word and share the fundraiser with family and friends.

You can click here and head over to a GoFundMe page set up to collect donations. You can also donate in person at 722 Main Street in uptown.
