In 1988, President Ronald Regan issued the first presidential proclamation that established the month of May as National Foster Care Awareness Month. Events and celebrations occur every May all over the United States to bring awareness to the unique challenges our foster children face, to honor the relatives, family friends and foster parents who take care of our foster children and recognize the professionals, mentors, educators, advocates and other members of the community who work tirelessly for our foster children.
Beginning in 2015, and continuing in 2016, the Lassen County Board of Supervisors joined in proclaiming May as Foster Care Awareness Month in Lassen County.
Currently there are 45 Lassen County dependent and delinquent children in foster care. Likely, many of you know someone in this community who is taking care of a foster child, a grandchild, a niece or nephew, or a child of a friend. We ask you to please take a moment and thank these caregivers for their dedication to serving this county’s most vulnerable children.
If you are interested in becoming a foster parent please contact the Lassen County Child and Family Services department or the Lassen County Probation Department.
Also consider that becoming a foster parent is not the only way you can help support our foster children. Foster children and youth need to develop essential job skills, they often need educational tutors, they need mentors, Court Appointed Special Advocates and loving and comforting friends while they are separated from their homes.
