blmracThe Bureau of Land Management will welcome 15 northern California residents to its new Northern California District Resource Advisory Council. U. S. Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell recently announced the appointments.

Those named to the council and their areas of interest are:

Category one: Todd Swickard, Susanville, livestock grazing permit holders; Russ Hawkins, Bieber, timber industry; Skip Willmore, Burney, forest products; Alan Abbs, Red Bluff, rights of way; Roger Kirkpatrick, Eureka, off-highway-vehicle recreation.

Category two: Dr. Frank Bayham, Chico, archaeology and historical interests; Carol Montgomery, Susanville, recreation interests; Jennifer Powell, Redding, recreation interests; John Bernstein, Berkeley, environmental interests; Bill Phillips, Susanville, wild horses and burros.

Category three: Jessica Diermier, Susanville, environmental education; Martin Balding, Eagle Lake, state agencies involved in natural resources; Mary Nordstrom, Trinidad, public at large; Pat Frost, Weaverville, public at large; Leonard Moty, Redding, local elected officials.

“We are thrilled to have our new advisory council in place,” said BLM Northern California District Manager Nancy Haug. “Members will be involved in a variety of natural resource and public lands topics ranging from implementing conservation measures for greater sage-grouse to landscape-level land use planning in the central and coastal regions of our district.”

The advisory council will work closely with Haug and BLM managers in Susanville, Alturas, Redding and Arcata, advising on the BLM’s full multiple use management mission.

The new board replaces advisory councils previously in place for northeast and northwest California. It will meet several times a year in locations around the district.

The Bureau of Land Management formed 29 Resource Advisory Councils (RACs) in the western States to provide advice on the management of public lands and resources.
