The Nevada Highway Patrol has confirmed that a Correctional Officer who worked at High Desert State Prison was killed on July 11th as the result of injuries sustained in a crash near Cold Springs, Nevada. A crash that at least one witness attributed to a car which travelled into the motorcycle’s lane, struck the driver and then fled the scene. The NHP identified the victim as 51 year-old Stephen L. Hobbs, a father of three, who commuted to HDSP from his home in the Reno area.
“The preliminary investigation details,” explained Gibson, “indicate a black 2007 KTM sport bike ridden by Hobbs was traveling northbound on US 395 next to a possible silver/bluish 2000 or newer Subaru WRX hatchback style also traveling northbound.”
An independent witness cited in the NHP incident report stated that the Subaru came into the motorcycle’s travel lane and struck it, causing it to crash. Hobbs was thrown from the motorcycle and sustained critical injuries as a result. The driver of the vehicle involved continued northbound on US 395.
Hobbs was transported to Renown Medical Center where he later died as a result of injuries sustained from crash. The NHP reports that the victim was wearing a safety helmet at the time of the collision.
This area of US 395 is two lanes in each direction, a center median and an off ramp to Cold Springs. The speed limit is 65 mph.
