A fierce thunderstorm unleashed a torrential downpour Wednesday afternoon, triggering a substantial mudslide that forced the closure of a section of Highway 395 near the California-Nevada border. The slide occurred approximately a quarter-mile north of Red Rock Road, bringing traffic to a halt in both directions.
Caltrans crews worked for several hours through the night to clear the mud and debris. The highway finally reopened to traffic in both directions around 1:00 a.m. Thursday morning.
The thunderstorm was part of a series of intense weather cells that swept through southern Lassen County on Wednesday, causing minor flooding in other localized areas.
