Updated: Susanville Resident Upgraded to ‘Fair’ Condition

UPDATED: 3:19p.m.
After speaking with Renown Medical Center Spokesperson Dan Davis we have learned that Susanville resident Michael Nye, who received major injuries in last night’s crash on 395, has had his condition upgraded to ‘fair’ by the medical center.

According to Renown this means that vital signs are stable and within normal limits. Patient is conscious, but may be uncomfortable. Indicators are favorable.

The California Highway Patrol this morning released details of the multi-vehicle accident that claimed the life of a Santa Rosa man and sent three others to the hospital with minor to major injuries. The accident blocked traffic on Highway 395 for just over two hours Monday night.

According to the CHP a  2007 Ford Focus driven by a Santa Rosa man was traveling southbound on US-395, between County Road A-3 and Oak Tree Lane near Janesville when his vehicle collided with a deer.

As a result of this collision, his vehicle became disabled in the northbound lane.  Susanville resident Michael Nye was traveling southbound and came upon the disabled vehicle.  Nye stopped his vehicle on the southbound shoulder, activated his emergency flashers, and walked over to assist the man out of his vehicle.

As the pair stood beside the disabled vehicle a northbound car driven by a Sacramento resident approached the scene of the first collision and, according to the CHP report, did not observe the disabled vehicle blocking the roadway.  The front of that vehicle collided with the right rear portion of the disabled car.

The two men who were now standing outside of the vehicle were thrown in a northeasterly direction by the impact.  Both were transported by helicopter to Renown Medical Center in Reno, NV.  The Santa Rosa resident succumbed to his injuries a short time later. Michael Nye remains in critical condition this morning.

The collision is still under investigation. The name of the man who died in the accident will be released pending notification of relatives.
