The Susanville Fire Department has released the details of a December 5th structure fire on Parkdale Avenue that did damage to items in a detached storeroom but was contained by firefighters before it could spread to the residence.
The call first came in around 7:30 Thursday evening and arriving on-scene crews reported heavy smoke coming from a detached storeroom and carport.
Firefighting efforts contained the fire to items in the room and no structural damage was noted. There was no damage to the residence and the occupants were not displaced.
Investigation by the fire department determined the blaze was caused by combustible materials that were stored too close to an electrical wall heater. The heater started operating due to the cold weather.
The Susanville Fire Department urges all residents to double check heater settings and to ensure that combustible items are not stored around heaters, with the prolonged extreme cold weather heaters can inadvertently start even on the lowest setting.
According to the report there were 8 fire apparatus and 21 firefighters on-scene to battle the blaze and no fire fighter injuries were reported.
Susanville Fire Department was assisted by the following agencies: Susan River Fire Protection District, Cal Fire and the Susanville Police Department.
