An agricultural burn project is taking place this week at the Honey Lake Wildlife Refuge’s Fleming Wildlife Area, with smoke visible throughout the Honey Lake Valley. The project is a collaboration between the Cal-FIRE Lassen Modoc Unit and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.
The burn will treat approximately 360 acres of land and is intended to reduce flammable fuels and improve natural habitat. This project is part of Cal-FIRE’s year-round fuels reduction efforts, which aim to reduce dead and downed fuels, improve wildlife habitat, and decrease the risk of devastating wildfires.
Residents in the Honey Lake Valley area near the wildlife area may see smoke throughout the day. Officials are asking the public to not report the smoke as it is part of the planned operation.
