A rather dramatic shift in the weather begins today with high temperatures mainly in the mid-30s to upper-40s and the National Weather Service in Reno is warning area residents to plan for frost and freeze conditions tonight as northeastern California gets its first taste of winter.
Sub-freezing temperatures in the upper teens to upper 20s are expected between 11:00p.m. tonight and 11:00a.m. tomorrow here in the valley, as well as eastern Plumas County, eastern Sierra County, Surprise Valley, Reno, the Carson City-Minden Area, Mineral, Southern Lyon Counties and Northern Washoe County.
Frost and freeze conditions will kill crops, other sensitive vegetation and possibly damage unprotected outdoor plumbing.
Rain and snow showers will be possible this morning ahead of the very cold temperatures. Plan ahead and wake up early for any potential delays to the morning commute.
Take steps now to protect tender plants from the cold. To prevent freezing and possible bursting of outdoor water pipes they should be wrapped, drained, or allowed to drip slowly. Those that have in-ground sprinkler systems should drain them and cover above-ground pipes to protect them from freezing.
Breezy north winds today will make it feel that much colder and bring localized road travel impacts for high profile vehicles and choppy conditions to area lakes. Widespread gusts of 30-35 MPH are expected with stronger gusts above 40 MPH possible in the Eastern Sierra and Mineral County areas along Highways 395, 6, and 95.
Hard freezes are expected Monday and Tuesday nights region-wide and Freeze Warnings are in effect.
A quick burst of snow showers is likely this morning at all elevations. While totals will be rather meager, generally a dusting to half-inch, the early season snow could easily catch morning commuters off-guard. Allow extra time for your drive this morning.
