NWS Fire Weather Watch: Red Flag Warnings Tuesday and Wednesday

The National Weather Service in Reno has issued a Fire Weather Watch for gusty winds and low humidity, which is in effect from Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday evening.

Forecasters expect winds out of the southwest at 15 to 25 mph with gusts to 35 mph. Localized gusts up to 50 mph for more wind prone locations.

The humidity is expected to drop to between 7 and 17%.

Areas under the warning include Surprise Valley, western Lassen, eastern Plumas, eastern Sierra and eastern Nevada counties.

Dangerous fire conditions are expected to last from 4 to 9 hours each afternoon for valley locations with longer durations possible for upper slopes and ridges.

The combination of gusty winds and low humidity can cause fire to rapidly grow in size and intensity before first responders can contain them.

Preparedness Actions

Avoid outdoor activities that can cause a spark near dry vegetation, such as yard work, target shooting, or campfires. Follow local fire restrictions. Check weather.gov/reno for updates and livingwithfire.info for preparedness tips.
