The National Weather Service office in Reno has issued an Urgent Fire Weather Message for Lassen County and surrounding areas
A Fire Weather Watch will remain in effect from 2:00p.m. today until Thursday evening for abundant lightning in northeast California and northwest Nevada.
According to forecasters scattered to numerous thunderstorms will develop this afternoon and continue overnight into Thursday. While storms will be capable of heavy rain, abundant lightning and strikes outside the cores will be capable of starting new fires, especially from I-80 to the Oregon border.
Strong and erratic outflow winds to 40mph are possible.
Lightning can create new fire starts and may combine with strong outflow winds to cause a fire to rapidly grow in size and intensity before first responders can contain them.
Avoid outdoor activities that can cause a spark near dry vegetation, such as yard work, target shooting, or campfires.
