Forecasters at the National Weather Service office in Reno have issued a Fire Weather Watch for gusty winds and low humidity, which is in effect from Sunday afternoon through Sunday evening.
Areas where fire conditions are expected to become dangerous include all of Lassen County and a wide swath from Surprise Valley down to Mono County.
Southwest winds of 15 to 25mph, with gusts up to 40mph, are expected. The humidity will drop to between 6 and 12% in western Nevada, 12 to 20% in the Sierra.
The fire weather watch will last 4-6 hours in most locations, up to 8 hours in west central Nevada.
The combination of gusty winds and low humidity can cause fire to rapidly grow in size and intensity before first responders can contain them.
Avoid outdoor activities that can cause a spark near dry vegetation, such as yard work, target shooting, or campfires.
