The National Weather Service’s office in Reno is warning residents in our area to prepare for high, potentially damaging winds from 10:00a.m. until 8:00p.m. Friday.
Forecasters expect widespread south winds from 30 to 40mph with gusts up to 60mph. Wind prone areas will see gusts to 75mph and Sierra ridges will likely get to over 100mph between Friday morning and Friday evening.
Winds will cause travel impacts for high profile vehicles in addition to turbulence, wind shear and mountain wave activity for aviation. Winds may be strong enough to cause damage and blow high-profile vehicles over, especially along the Highway 395 corridor.
The National Weather Service says that now is the time to secure loose outdoor items such as patio furniture, holiday decorations, and trash cans before winds increase which could blow these items away. The best thing to do is prepare ahead of time by making sure you have extra food and water on hand, flashlights with spare batteries and/or candles in the event of a power outage.
