NWS Weather Bulletin: Series of Strong Storms Target Northeastern California

weatherupdate

Good afternoon everybody! The National Weather Service office in Reno has issued a series of advisories warning residents to prepare for snow, intense rain and dangerously gusty winds between now and Thursday night.

Winter Weather Advisory

A Winter Weather Advisory will be in effect from 4:00p.m. this 10:00a.m. Wednesday.

Forecasters expect snow will begin this afternoon and continue into Wednesday morning. We can look for snow accumulations of 2 to 6 inches mainly north of Susanville and Gerlach including the Surprise Valley. Heavier amounts of 6 to 12 inches above 5,500 feet west of Highway 395.

Snow levels will stay near the valley floors through tonight, then rise to above 6,000 feet by late Wednesday morning.

Snow will create icy and snow covered roads with poor visibility.

Areal Flood Watch

A Flood Watch will be in effect from late Wednesday night through late Thursday night.

The National Weather Service in Reno has issued a Flood Watch for portions of California and western Nevada, including the following areas; the Lake Tahoe basin; Lassen County; the eastern portions of Plumas and Sierra counties, and the Reno, Carson City and Minden areas.

Between Thursday morning and late Thursday night an atmospheric river will produce a period of intense rainfall on saturated soils with snow levels near 8,000 feet. Heavy rain on saturated soils will lead to an increased threat for flooding near creeks, streams, drainage ditches, urban areas and farmland.

Creeks, streams, drainage ditches, urban areas and farmland are the most susceptible to flooding. Excessive rainfall may also generate rock and mud slides in steep terrain. Persons living near small creeks, streams and pastures should be prepared to take action if flooding occurs.

High Wind Warning

A High Wind Warning will be in effect from 10:00a.m. Wednesday to 10:00a.m. Thursday.

Southwest winds will increase Wednesday and continue into Thursday morning. The strongest winds are expected Wednesday evening into Wednesday night.

Winds will blow at 20 to 40 mph with gusts to 65 mph. Local gusts to 80 mph in wind prone areas including Highway 395 south of Susanville.

The National Weather Service warns that winds of this magnitude have the potential to damage trees, power lines and roofs. Strong cross winds will create hazardous driving conditions with road closures possible.
