Forecasters at the National Weather Service office in Reno have issued an Red Flag Warning, which will be in effect until 10:00 this evening.
The warning covers eastern Lassen and Northern Washoe Counties.
Forecasters expect gusty winds and low humidity to prevail until this evening with winds out of the west-southwest at 15 to 20 mph with gusts 30 to 40 mph.
The strongest winds will be south of a line from Ravendale to Gerlach.
For the next four hours or so humidity will remain at 7 to 15 percent.
The combination of gusty winds and low humidity can cause fire to rapidly grow in size and intensity before first responders can contain them.
Avoid outdoor activities that can cause a spark near dry vegetation, such as yard work, target shooting, or campfires. Follow local fire restrictions. Check weather.gov/reno for updates and livingwithfire.info for preparedness tips.
