SusanvilleStuff Business Spotlight: Lassen Axe Throwing

by Marshel Couso

Competitive axe throwing, a new fun group activity that is sweeping the nation, has come to the Honey Lake Valley, thanks to sudden inspiration that struck a local couple while they were on a date in Reno.

Shandre and Matt Wolcott, the creative minds behind Lassen Axe, a new and exciting axe-throwing business on Main Street in Susanville, went on a date to a Reno axe venue and realized it would be a perfect fit for our town.

The perfect location for their new venue was already in the family, a building with quite a history. Wolcott’s father-in-law, Rudy Valentine, owns the massive building at the corner of Main and Sacramento streets which previously housed the U.S. Forest Service, and before that was a Coca-Cola bottling plant known as the Susanville Bottling Company.

By combining Shandre and Matt’s passion for axe throwing with the historical significance of the building, they realized they could create something truly remarkable. And so, the journey to restore a portion of the old building and establish Lassen Axe began.

The renovation was a family affair with Matt and his Dad Jim doing the bulk of the work on the interior, helped out by a crew made up of the Wolcott kids – Roman, Andre, Ace and Mariah.

The connection between axe-throwing and the local lumber industry is something that resonates deeply with the couple. Axe throwing, beyond being a thrilling sport, also serves as a tribute to the area’s heritage and celebrates the skills that were once essential for survival in the wilderness.

According to Wolcott, axe-throwing, as a sport, offers incredible benefits for mental health and stress relief. For those who step into the throwing lane, there’s a certain therapeutic aspect to letting go of worries and embracing the thrill of hitting the target.

The appeal of axe throwing extends to families as well. Lassen Axe embraces this enthusiasm and has established a junior co-ed league that has turned out to be a resounding success. The league not only hones the skills of young participants but also fosters social connections and personal growth.

Lassen Axe welcomes groups and private parties, making it an ideal venue for gatherings of up to forty-nine guests.

Whether it’s a birthday celebration, a team-building event or just a casual get-together, throwing brings people together for a truly unforgettable experience.

For the Wolcotts, axe-throwing is more than just a business venture; itā€™s become a passion. Matt and Shandre have been overwhelmed by the positive impact the new business has had on the community.

Participants often find themselves feeling empowered by the sport, relishing the adrenaline rush and the thrill of hitting the bullseye. The physical aspects of axe-throwing make it a surprisingly effective workout and an attractive option for fitness enthusiasts.
