The Lassen County Office of Education hosted “6th Grade Day on the Bizz,” last week, transforming the scenic Bizz Johnson Trail into an immersive classroom for 165 local students.
The event, made possible through a generous grant from the Kids to Parks Day School Grants Program, offered students a unique opportunity to connect with nature through hands-on learning experiences in environmental education, wellness and outdoor recreation.
Throughout the day, students rotated through four interactive and engaging educational stations:
The “Green Invaders: Plant Patrol” station introduced students to invasive species and their effects on the local ecosystem with the Honey Lake Valley Resource Conservation District Manager.
“Camp Challenge: Hobo Games Edition” allowed students to build outdoor shelters, participate in survival challenges, and test their aim with bow and arrow target shooting.
In “Trail Tales and Tree Whispers,” students explored mindfulness techniques and the importance of mental wellness in natural spaces. Finally, “Critters of the Canyon” featured a visit from a California Department of Fish and Wildlife Warden who educated students about local wildlife and conservation efforts.
“This event gives students the opportunity to be curious, hands-on learners while gaining a deeper appreciation for the environment,” said LCOE Director of Student, Family and Community Engagement, James Hall.
“It’s about igniting a sense of stewardship for the natural world and showing students how fun learning can be outside the classroom.”
One enthusiastic student summed up the experience, saying, “I felt like a real explorer today, learning about nature and helping take care of it was so cool!”
The daylong event not only supported academic standards in science and wellness but also aligned with LCOE’s broader goal of fostering lifelong learning and community engagement.
