An Oregon resident was killed October 19th, in a traffic collision on Highway 44, east of Butte Lake Road, according to details released by the Susanville office of the California Highway Patrol.
The Oregon man, identified by the CHP as 78-year old Raymond W. Carey, was driving his Toyota Camry westbound on the highway at around 65mph at the same time a 2018 Freightliner big-rig was approaching from the opposite direction at around 55mph.
The Freightliner was driven by 38-year old Francisco Garcia of Thousand Palms, California.
“For an unknown reason,” the CHP report states, “Mr. Carey allowed his vehicle to veer left, cross the center line, into the direct path of the Freightliner, resulting in a head on collision.”
Carey was killed and his passenger, 77-year old Betty Carey of Sutherlin, Oregon, sustained major injuries in the crash.
The driver of the big-rig was transported to Banner Lassen Medical Center with minor injuries.
