Paiute Ancestors Honored at Papoose Meadows Gathering

The Wadatkuta Band of Northern Paiutes of Honey Lake Valley will host a spiritual gathering this Sunday, June 8th, in Papoose Meadows, at Eagle Lake. The event, known as “YUGGA TUBWAH,” will begin at 12:00p.m.

The gathering serves as a remembrance of the Paiute ancestors who were massacred at Papoose Meadows in June 1866.

Opening ceremonies at Papoose Meadows will be led by Dean Barlese and will include spiritual singers and drummers, spiritual prayers and welcome speeches. A potluck feast will follow the ceremony.

To get to Papoose Meadows from Susanville head west on Highway 36. Turn onto Eagle Lake Road about 3.3 miles west of town and head up to the lake, following the signs to Gallatin Beach. A sign will be posted for the Papoose Meadows turnoff on the right.

Per Forest Service rules no vehicles are allowed across the meadow. No drugs or alcohol are permitted.
