The Lassen Land and Trails Trust will be teaming up with the Bizz Running Company on Saturday, May 14th, to host the 22nd Annual Paiute Meadows Trail Run at Susanville Ranch Park. The event will offer a 13.6-mile half-marathon, a 50k race, a 4.5-mile trail course and a 1-mile kids’ fun run.
With almost 5000 feet of elevation climb in Susanville Ranch Park, the 50K race (31 miles) is a challenging, yet rewarding, course. Traversing lush meadows, pine-covered forests, spring-fed creeks, lava flows, and wildflower-covered hillsides, the course rises to reveal a spectacular vista of the entire Honey Lake Valley.
The 13.6-mile trail half-marathon follows some of the 50k course, including the final downhill thrill of locally-named Heart Attack Hill. It is the perfect course for those who are not ready to tackle the 50k distance.
The 4.5-mile trail race is the 21-year-old foundation of the Paiute Meadows race. This beautiful race is a great test of stamina with the challenge and reward of climbing up and over Coyote Bluff. Novice trail runners and seasoned experts alike will find their fortitude tested in this short, but intense trail race, said race coordinator Linda Powell.
Powell said all three race distance are reasonably priced and have stepped entry fee increases. The 50K starts at $55 until March 2nd, when it increases to $60. On May 1st, the price increases to $65. The half marathon starts at $45, increases to $50, and then to $55. The 4.5-mile trail race starts at $20, and increases to $25, and then to $30.
Susanville Ranch Park is home to an intricate and stunningly beautiful singletrack trail system. The addition of the exciting new 50K and half marathon distances will make this event the first regional trail distance running event to be held almost entirely on single track trails.
Through region-wide promotion, this race is garnering support and interest from trail runners. It has been selected as the target race for the Fleet Feet Chico Spring Trail Training programs. Trail Runner Magazine chose the Paiute Meadows Trail Run as their featured race for the May 14th slot on their 2016 wall calendar.
