A 21-year old Susanville man is in jail tonight, held on attempted murder and assault charges in connection with a shooting that took place shortly after noon on Park Street in Susanville.
At around 12:15 Friday afternoon officers from the Susanville Police Department responded to the 1600 block of Fifth Street for a reported altercation – possibly involving a firearm.
According to Susanville Police Lieutenant Matt Wood, an officer who was en route to the scene was contacted by two subjects in the Susanville Grocery Outlet parking lot who reported that their vehicle had been shot several times by a subject with a rifle.
The shooting took place, explained Lieutenant Wood, during a verbal altercation over a relationship with a female subject.
While on scene, officers were contacted by Susanville resident Jerome Thomas, who was identified by both victims as the shooter.
As a result of the victims identifying the suspect and the investigation, Thomas was taken into custody without incident and booked into the Lassen County Jail on multiple charges including attempted murder, assault with a firearm and shooting at an occupied vehicle. Thomas was held on $520,000 bail.
The Susanville Police Department was assisted by the Lassen County Sheriff’s Office, the Lassen County District Attorney’s Office and U.S. Forest Service Law Enforcement Officers during the investigation.
