Lassen Land and Trails Trust held their annual Paiute Meadows Trail Run early Saturday morning in front of an absolutely gorgeous spring backdrop at Susanville Ranch Park.
The Run for the Trails, which features courses of differing lengths through the heart of the Ranch Park trail system, was reinvented this year with an amazing amount of participation from local groups, businesses and organizations.
Race organizers, spearheaded by Director Jim Reichle, had a well thought-out plan to expand the already popular trail run into something broader that could include more of the community. What came of that inspiration, and a lot of hard work by volunteers, was one of the nicest events of the year – and a good time for young and old.
Booths flanking the Start and Finish Line were manned by local businesses and organizations like Rotary, Kiwanis and Soroptimists handed out healthy snacks and neat stuff for the assembled runners. A lot of the local businesses who took part, like Safeway, Banner Lassen and the Health Nut where there to promote health awareness and healthy living.
Runners, walkers and bicyclists came in all shapes and sizes, with some even running in costume! The one-mile kid’s trail run and senior’s walk was held first and the 4.5-mile and 2-mile trail run/walks followed.
Prizes were awarded by Reichle for fastest runners in a variety of categories, along with a special medallion for Phil Nemir. Nemir was the driving force behind the Paiute Meadows Run Walk 21 years ago and has remained an integral part of the trails event for the past two decades.
