A new section has been added to Susanville’s Community Garden project on the Susan River near Pat Murphy field, a portion of the garden has been set aside just for veterans who would like to take advantage of the space to grow fruits and vegetables. The space was dedicated at 11:11a.m. on Veteran’s day with a small, socially-distanced crowd in attendance.
“It is our hope that the veterans will enjoy gardening along side our other community gardeners,” explains organizer Sandra Horst.
Seth Anderson, David Heard and Mark Nortrup, along with the Vet-to-Vet group completed the Veterans Garden early this growing season.
It is comprised of two raised bed gardens and a standing/wheelchair accessible tabletop garden.
“We will begin the wheelchair accessible walkway project next spring,” said Horst.
“We will be creating an opportunity to buy personalized bricks to honor community members and veterans similar to what can be seen in Pancera Plaza in uptown Susanville.
All proceeds from the brick fundraiser will fund soil amendments, seeds and plant starts for all three veteran beds.
The fundraiser is not underway yet, but more information will be available in the near future on the the Community Garden Facebook page.
