Lassen County 4H’ers welcomed prospective new members at their annual Open House held Tuesday evening at the Tractor Supply Store on Main Street in Susanville.

Project, animal and educational displays from eight different Lassen County 4H clubs gave visitors a chance to see what amazing things can be done as part of the group.

New enrollments for Lassen 4H begin September 1st, giving youth aged 5 to 19 a chance to participate in hands-on learning experiences.

Katelyn Kirack says, “Do you want to join 4H?”

The 4H Program is an educational youth program conducted by the University of California Cooperative Extension. The purpose of 4-H is to help young people discover and develop their potential and grow into competent, contributing and caring citizens.

Learn-by-doing activities, youth-adult partnerships, and research-based educational programs help young people enhance their leadership abilities and develop a wide range of other life skills including responsibility, community service, citizenship and critical thinking.

4H allows members to explore things like shooting sports, photography, cooking, quilting, art leadership, gardening, animal projects and more.

How do you join? Pick a 4-H club you would like to join, then contact the club leader, or stop by the 4-H Office at 707 Nevada Street.

Enrollment time in most clubs is open September 1 through November 15, but enrollment in some clubs may be closed. Any youth between the ages of 5 through 18 are eligible to enroll. The youth member insurance fee is $75, and the adult volunteer leader insurance fee is $28.

Choose projects that interest you. A variety of projects are offered including animal care, arts and crafts, community service and leadership, and much more! You don’t have to live on a ranch or a farm to participate. Projects offer the opportunity for hands-on learning.

Club activities occur after school, in the evenings, and on weekends. Club meetings are held once a month and project meetings are held once a month or less. The purpose of these meetings is to guide the members in gaining knowledge, attitudes, skills, and habits needed to complete their work successfully. Project manuals and guides, reports, and record forms are available.
