Plan on a Little Extra Time if You Are Headed Over Fredonyer on Highway 36

Lassen County drivers are advised to expect significant delays on State Route 36 east of Fredonyer Summit as Caltrans and Tullis, Inc. begin construction on a new temporary detour. The project is a response to recent seismic activity that has impacted the roadway.

The new detour is being built to provide a stable, two-lane route before winter weather sets in. Crews are currently working on tree removal, electrical line extensions, and guardrail installation. The Susanville CHP Office recently issued a social media update noting multiple traffic stops on SR-36 between Chester and Susanville, advising motorists to allow for extra travel time.

Drivers traveling on the highway should be prepared for one-way traffic control 24/7, which may cause delays of up to ten minutes. Temporary traffic signals are in place, and speed limits have been reduced to 25MPH in paved areas and 15MPH on unpaved sections.

Caltrans emphasizes that the 25MPH speed limit will remain in effect even after the new detour is open.

Geological and survey investigations are ongoing to determine a long-term solution for the highway.

Caltrans warns that conditions on the road may change at any time due to weather or new slide activity. The agency urges all travelers to plan ahead, be patient, and drive safely through the work zone to ensure the safety of both themselves and the construction crews.
