Police Association Offering New ‘Legacy’ Scholarships for LHS Students

scholarshipThe Susanville Police Officer’s Association has announced a new scholarship opportunity for Lassen High students who are looking to pursue a career in law enforcement, and for those students who are children of law enforcement professionals, either current or retired.

At the moment the association is planning on awarding two $500 scholarships but as more funds are raised, and with almost all of the department’s officers agreeing to pitch-in additional money, the group is hoping to either raise the amount of the scholarships or sponsor an additional student.

“We know the sacrifice children of law enforcement parents make having one or both parents in the field,” explains Susanville Police Officer Terra Avilla. “We want to help honor them in any way we can.”

“We also wanted to support any student wishing to pursue a career in this field, so we decided to make the scholarship available to them as well.”

Students competing for the scholarship will have to complete an essay on one of two topics. In one question students are asked how having a parent in law enforcement has affected them or molded them growing up.

“I was able to speak with one student today, who was filling out the paperwork, and I caught a glimpse of their essay and it almost brought me to tears,” says Avilla. “We cannot wait to go through them.”
