Tonight’s a big night for the Susanville Police K9 program, with a major fundraiser at the Diamond Mountain Casino featuring a Taco Feed, live music by the band Forgery and a silent auction full of great items donated by generous local merchants.
All money raised will help fund a canine officer program for the Susanville Police Department. The organization is about halfway to a goal of $25,000, the total for bringing a much needed K9 unit to town.
“Canine programs are definitely not free,” explains Susanville Chief of Police Kevin Jones. “The canine and the handler require ongoing training, more so than the typical patrol Officer and unfortunately training occurs out of the area.”
“However,” continues Chief Jones, “the canine and its handler will be part of training group out of Washoe County which will be free of charge, a substantial savings to the program. At the end of the day the program will be worth every penny to our community.”
It has been nearly three decades since the department last had a canine officer, Chief Jones was just a young officer on the force back then.
“I appreciate the fact I was here when the PD began its first canine program and I am able to be a part of bringing it back. As I have said so many times, we live in a giving community and the resounding support we have received for this program is overwhelming.”
Jones has made the K9 program a priority for the department. His energetic project leader, Officer Mike Hoover, has been a terrific advocate for the program while at the same time gathering an impressive array of resources. Along with fundraising, community outreach and working out the logistics of training Hoover was also tasked with finding sources for dog food, veterinarian services and other K9 related needs.
“Officer Hoover’s dedication and drive towards this project is incredible and leaves me zero doubt that he is the best person to lead this program.”
