The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, in partnership with local agencies, will be conducting a prescribed burn in the area of Riverside Drive, south of the Susan River, near the old SPI Mill site in Susanville.
The burn operations are scheduled to begin today, August 29th, weather permitting, and may continue for up to two weeks. Fire suppression resources will be actively working in the area, and smoke may be visible. However, there is no need to report the fire.
The purpose of the prescribed burn is to reduce fuel loads and prevent dangerous conditions for residents and visitors during the peak fire season. This area is frequently plagued by nuisance fires, which can pose a threat to homes and infrastructure.
By reducing the amount of available fuel, Cal-FIRE, along with City of Susanville Fire Department and the Susan River Fire District hopes to mitigate the impact of future wildfires.
