Woo-Hoo! Fishing Derby time!

Kids ages 2 to 15 are invited to come enjoy fishing along Paiute Creek and the Susan River this morning as the Lassen Sportsmen’s Club presents their 24th Annual Junior Fishing Derby.

Year after year the fishing derby is a terrific place for young anglers to get a taste for the sport, for free, weeks earlier than the regular opening of local rivers and streams for the season.

The busy morning started at 5:00 with registration and check-in at Memorial Park. From now till 8:30 Susanville Supermarket IGA and Morning Glory Dairy will provide a free breakfast for children consisting of   donuts, fruit, hot chocolate and juice.

Between 10:30 and 1:00 a  lunch will be served by Frosty Mill, D&L Distributing, Rainbow Bread, Burger King, Grocery Outlet, and will be offered to all participants.  Adults may purchase breakfast or lunch will provide free breakfast which will include donuts, fruit, hot chocolate, and juice.

The derby ends at 2:45 with awards and prizes in several categories including ‘largest fish’ and Sportsmanship Awards for boys and girls in two different age groups.

Ages 2 and 5- First place bicycle donated by Leslie’s  Jewelery, U.S. Bank; second place, fishing rod and reel donated by Western Nevada Supply;third place, tackle box donated by Larry’s Spirit Gas. Additional donations and prizes are provided by Eleanora Hall, Lassen Addressing, Pete Talia, the Deiter family, Bill Kauffman, Walgreens, Pizza Factory, Elegant Iris & Men’s Den and Sierra Theatre.

The fish were planted and and the following sponsors helped make the planting possible; Lassen County Fish and Game Commission; supervisors Jim Chapman, Bob Pyle and Larry Wosick; Susanville city Council; C&S Waste; Western Nevada Supply; and Susanville Indian Tribal Office.

Derby prizes will be awarded after the 3:00p.m. close of the event, winners don’t need to be present to win. Participants do need to be at the awards ceremony to win door prizes. Kids shooting for the ‘largest fish’ prizes must be in line for weigh-in by 3:00p.m.

We’ll have a big gallery of photos and Niki will have results from the derby this afternoon right here on SusanvilleStuff.

Now go fish!
