Susanville’s Noon Rotary club had as guests, the students from Lassen High’s Advanced Welding Program and their instructor Mike Somerville. Over the last four months the advanced welders completed the fabrication of a new Rotary Flag trailer. The trailer is used by the club to shuttle flags and volunteers as they decorate the length of Main Street with American flags for special occasions.
Rob Allen at High Sierra Collision got the all-steel trailer painted the base color of blue and in the coming weeks an accent color of yellow gold will be added to highlight the lettering and Rotary signage will be installed.
The existing trailer was built in the 1960’s by crews from the California Correctional Center and prior to 1989 the flag trailer was operated by the Susanville Lions Club. When they disbanded, the trailer moved to the Rotary Club of Susanville, who have operated it since that time.
The old trailer was seriously in need of repair and it was decided that a new one should be obtained. Fortunately, the LHS Advanced Welding program was available to take on the task as a class project, supported by District Superintendent Bill McCabe.
If all goes well and the safety and directional lights get installed, the inaugural use of the new trailer could take place this coming Monday, May 30th for Memorial Day. The next two dates that flags will be displayed (weather permitting) are Flag Day on June 14th and Independence Day on July 4th.
