Lassen County Sheriff John McGarva issued a statement late Monday afternoon addressing the inclusion of Lassen County on the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s list of ‘Sanctuary Counties’ despite an earlier Board of Supervisors’ resolution stating the opposite.
According to McGarva, the Sheriff’s Office received a notification of a list issued by the United States Department of Homeland Security on Friday, and Lassen County was included in a list of ‘Sanctuary Counties.’
“Counties with such a designation do not cooperate or provide information to the Department of Immigration and Customs Enforcement,” McGarva explains adding that officials from Lassen County were not contacted or consulted about being added to this list.
“On January 8, 2019, the Lassen County Board of Supervisors passed Resolution #19-004 stating that we are not a Sanctuary County,” said McGarva. “The Sheriff’s Office will continue to work with all Federal, State and Local Partners to ensure the safety of our citizens in Lassen County.”
On Monday, according to McGarva, the list was removed from the Homeland Security website after concerns expressed by Sheriffs nationwide.
