The Lassen County Sheriff’s Office wants people to be aware of a scam that is occurring inĀ multiple counties in California. Sheriff’s Departments across the state are receiving multiple reports of citizensĀ receiving phone calls from someone identifying themselves as an employee of their office.
The person impersonating a Sheriff’s Office employee advises the citizen thatĀ a warrant is about to be issued in the citizen’s name unless a payment is made within 90 minutes.
The caller may be using a technique known as “caller ID spoofing” which allows the caller toĀ make their phone number appear to be from the Sheriff’s Office. This is a scam.
The LassenĀ County Sheriff’s Office does not call citizens to advise them of warrants being issued.
If you receive a phone call from someone identifying themselves as a LCSO employee advisingĀ of a warrant being issued or requesting payment, do not provide any personal information orĀ credit card numbers. If you receive such a call, please report it to LCSO. Our non-emergencyĀ phone number is (530) 257-6121.
Although we have not received any reports of this scam occurring in Lassen County, it is likelyĀ to occur based on what we are hearing from other jurisdictions. Please help us prevent theseĀ crimes by letting your friends and family about this scam.
