Demolition experts from the Shasta County Regional Bomb Squad helped Lassen County Sheriff’s Deputies safely dispose of a pair of homemade explosives Sunday, after the devices turned up in a vehicle search in Westwood last week.
According to details released today by Lassen County Sheriff Dean Growdon, a Deputy contacted two people on Fir Street in Westwood at about 5:00p.m., on May 30th, and during the subsequent search of the vehicle, and further investigation, the deputy located drug paraphernalia and two Improvised Explosive Devices.
“The deputy conducted an investigation related to the status of the vehicle in possession of the two people,” explains Sheriff Growdon, “and found that the vehicle had been embezzled from the registered owner.”
The vehicle was towed and stored by a local tow company. The IED’s were seized as evidence, and retained for safe disposal.
28-year old Westwood resident Amy Clapper and 22-year old Greenville resident Chance Tolen were booked at the Lassen County Jail for violations including possession of an explosive near a residence, which is a felony, and possession of unlawful paraphernalia, which is a misdemeanor.
On June 3rd, technicians from the Shasta bomb squad transported the IED’s to a safe disposal location near Susanville, and used a high powered explosive to safely destroy the devices.
