Sheriff’s Office Reminding Boaters to Stay Safe This Memorial Day Weekend

Memorial Day weekend is upon us with chances of erratic weather and thunderstorms predicted again today. The Lassen County Sheriff’s Office is reminding people recreating this weekend on the water to be safe and to make sure they have the proper safety equipment on their vessels.

There’s nothing like an enjoyable afternoon boating on one of our high mountain lakes but the Sheriff’s Office is reminding boaters that anyone is just a mistake away from disaster, especially as water traffic gets heavier this summer.

  • There should be one readily accessible lifejacket (PFD) on board a vessel for every person on the vessel. The lifejacket must be serviceable, proper size and fit and Coast Guard approved. This includes paddle craft users.
  • All children under the age of 13 years must wear a lifejacket on board a recreational vessel.
  • Be aware of excessive debris on the lakes and shallow areas this early in the season as water levels are quickly changing.
  • Do not drink and drive and maintain a sober driver.

The lake water is still cool in our high lakes. Swimmers should take caution when entering the water. Excessive amounts of time in the cold water could lead to medical issues.

The Sheriff’s office encourages everyone to wear a lifejacket when or near the water.
