Sheriff’s Office Warns Residents to be Wary of Spoofed Telephone Calls from Scammers

The Lassen County Sheriff’s Office is warning area residents to be alert after receiving numerous reports of scammers making fraudulent calls related to alleged outstanding warrants for arrest.

The scammers, according to details provided by Lassen County Sheriff Dean Growdon, are ‘spoofing’ the caller ID so it will appear that the call is coming from a Sheriff’s Office phone number.
They attempt to collect payment from their victims over the phone or convince them to send money orders.

“The Lassen County Sheriff’s Office does not make calls related to outstanding arrest warrants, and does not collect payments over the phone,” explains Growdon.

If you receive one of these ‘spoofing’ calls, hang up, and report it to the Federal Communications Commission, you can file a complaint online or contact them by phone at 1-888-CALL-FCC (1-888-225-5322).
