Small Brush Fire Closes Highway 36 Near Susan River Bridge

Firefighters from the Susanville Fire Department and Cal-FIRE LMU made quick work of a small brush fire that briefly forced the closure of Highway 36, just east of the Susanville city limits Thursday evening.

Shortly before 8:00p.m. SFD Engine 621 responded to a possible brush fire near McDonalds, arriving to find a 10’ x 10’ fire located under the bridge, on the east side of the Susan River.

“The fire consisted of tree branches and a thick layer of bark,” explains SFD Engineer Andrew Jarrett. “E-621 extinguished the fire with the assistance from CalFire E-2261. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.”

The highway was shut down, between the intersections of Riverside Drive and Skyline Road, for about an hour.

Agencies at the scene included the Susanville Fire Department, Cal-FIRE, Susanville Police Department, Lassen County Sheriff’s Department and California Highway Patrol.
