Standard Filing Period for Local Candidates Ends this Friday

Lassen County Clerk-Recorder Julie Bustamante has issued a Notice of Election for the upcoming Statewide Direct Primary Election, which is set to take place on Tuesday, June 2nd. This primary will feature a substantial ballot, covering everything from California’s highest executive offices to vital local positions that impact the daily lives of Lassen County residents.

The Ballot: From Sacramento to Susanville
Voters will be asked to weigh in on a long list of voter-nominated state offices, including the Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Secretary of State, Controller, Treasurer, Attorney General, and Insurance Commissioner. The ballot also includes the Superintendent of Public Instruction, the 1st District Member of the State Board of Equalization, and the 1st District State Assembly seat.

Of particular note this cycle is a Special Primary Election to fill a vacancy for the U.S. Representative for Congressional District 1. This special election has been consolidated with the regular primary to streamline the process for voters.

At the local level, several nonpartisan county offices are up for grabs. Residents will be electing a Judge of the Superior Court for Department 1, as well as the County Assessor, Auditor-Controller, Clerk-Recorder and Treasurer-Tax Collector.

The race also includes the Superintendent of Schools and Supervisor seats for both the 3rd and 5th Districts. Additionally, two seats for the Susanville City Council will be on the ballot; however, those interested in running for City Council must file their paperwork specifically with the Susanville City Clerk rather than Bustamante’s county office.

Information for Candidates
Candidates may obtain nomination papers and file their official Declaration of Candidacy until this Friday, March 6th.

In the event that an incumbent does not file for their seat, the deadline will be extended to March 11th for all other eligible applicants.

To qualify for office, the California Elections Code requires all candidates to be registered voters and meet the specific legal requirements for the office they seek at the time papers are issued.

Those interested can visit the County Clerk’s office located behind the Historic Courthouse at 220 South Lassen Street, Suite 5. The office is open for filing Monday through Friday, from 9:00a.m. to 12:00 and 1:00p.m. to 4:30p.m.

How to Vote
Lassen County voters can expect to see their official ballots arrive in the mail beginning May 4th. Each ballot will include a postage-paid return envelope to make participation as easy as possible. Voters have several options for returning their marked ballots: they can be sent back through the mail, placed in an Official Ballot Drop Box, or hand-delivered to the County Clerk’s office.

For those who prefer the traditional experience, polling locations will be open on Election Day, June 2nd, from 7:00a.m. until 8:00p.m. To provide extra support to the community, the Elections Office will also hold special Saturday hours on May 30th from 9:00a.m. to 3:00p.m.

For further details on filing fees, candidate qualifications, or general election questions, residents are encouraged to call 1.530.251.8352 or visit the county’s election website at www.lassencounty.org.
