A fire which originally broke out on the old SPI Mill Property south of Riverside Drive in Susanville July 19th, flared up again Thursday afternoon, but was quickly knocked down by firefighters.
The Susanville Fire Department had responded to the original vegetation fire at around 4:30p.m, Tuesday.
“Upon arrival, Susanville Engine 621 responded to the area of Lassen County Superior Court to secure potential fire spread on the northeast side of the river. Susanville Engine 628 responded to the southwest side and worked with Cal-Fire and other crews to contain the fire located on the old SPI mill property,” explains SFD Captain Leon Myers.
Forward progress of the fire was stopped at around 5:00p.m., and crews worked to ensure that all areas of the fire were controlled. According to Myers, the joint effort between multiple agencies ensured that the fire was limited to approximately two acres.
On July 21st, shortly after 2:00p.m., Engine 621, C600, and AC601 from the Susanville Fire Department again responded to the old mill property for a reported vegetation fire. Units arrived on scene and reported an approximately one-quarter acre fire with a moderate rate of spread.
“E621, with assistance from Cal Fire and LNF deployed a hose lay and extinguished the fire,” detailed Fire Captain Kalvn McFarland in the report.
“Forward progress was stopped, and fire crews proceeded to cut hand line and perform 100% mop up. Cal Fire Dozer 2241 put a dozer line around the fire.”
According to McFarland the second fire was a rekindle of the fire that started on July 19th.
“That fire had been turned over to the property owner for observation and mop up. The first fire was human-caused and is under investigation.”
The Susanville Fire Department was assisted on the two fires by Lassen National Forest, Cal-Fire, Janesville Fire Protection District, Susan River fire protection district, California Correctional Center, Susanville Police Department, Lassen County Sheriff’s Office and Lassen Municipal Utility District.
