Summer Truly Begins This Weekend with First Farmers Market of the Season

A Susanville summer tradition spanning nearly 25 years returns to historic uptown this Saturday, as the 2019 series of weekly Farmers Markets kicks off in Pancera Plaza featuring the best in local produce, eggs, cottage foods and amazing artwork and crafts.

The event, which begins at 8:00a.m., is sponsored by Lassen Land and Trails Trust and the Historic Uptown Susanville Association and runs each Saturday through September 14th.

This first market of the season will feature a live performance by local musician Dale Keefer.

Returning from last year’s successful market season are names like Hulsman Ranch Beef & Lamb, Rustic Rancher, Yoon Chaos Berries, Julia’s Fruitstand, Honey Rae’s Bakeshop, GL&L Smokehouse, Tamales Colima, Debbie Anderson Pottery, Jeff Fairbank, Scentsy, Skedadle Mountain Gifts, Desert Sage Upcycled Creations and the Lassen County Arts Council.

New offerings at the market will include; Sno Mountain Shaved Ice; E8 Ranch, Home Baked Goods; Royce and Aspen Brown, produce and Roots & Fruits Regenerative Farms.

Sno Mountain will be giving free shaved ice to the first 50 customers to his booth.

Lassen County Social Services will be there with several promotions and the EBT Token Match program.

Farmers Market Manager Laura Medvin reminds residents that Pancera Plaza is closed to vehicles every Friday night at midnight throughout the season.

Market Spotlight

Sam , from Honey Rae’s Bakeshop

Sam at Honey Rae’s Bakeshop sells a variety of homemade baked goods at the Farmers Market. This will be her 3rd summer selling at the event.

“I chose to do it originally because I needed to do something when my husband and I moved here 2 years ago,” she explains. “But since then I have found that it has been a great way to support and be a part of our small community.”

“I have met so many great people through the market and hope to see the market continue to be supported and grow. I will continue to make many favorite items like: molasses crinkles, cherry streusel cake, german chocolate brownies, lemon bars, rosemary shortbread and honey caramels to name a few… but also plan to make some new items like vegan energy bites this summer.”

The market is actively recruiting new vendors to expand the selections in local produce, cottage foods and artisans for the 2019 season. Becoming a Certified Producer is easy.

The Market will connect you with the Lassen County Agricultural Commissioner’s Office to coordinate a field visit of your growing site and complete the Producers Certificate with you and that’s it.

Why is this important to the Farmer?

According to Medvin, through the market the farmer is personally invested in doing what they love.

“A Certified Farmers Market gives them a place to share their product and reach both the returning customers and educate new consumers about the importance of farm fresh produce while supporting local businesses. Farmers will post their certification at their booth, be sure to look for it. This is their way of guaranteeing you a fresh, locally grown product.”

The LLTT & HUSA effort to bring a Certified Farmers’ Market to Susanville every year involves extensive planning and careful consideration. Not only do the vendors obtain a certification themselves, but the Farmers Market also obtains an authorization from the Lassen County Agriculture Commissioners Office to operate as a CFM.

“LLTT & HUSA ensure that you enjoy a Farmers Market with the highest standards in health, cleanliness and good business practices.”
