Sunday Report: Likely Fire at 9,800 Acres and 35 Percent Contained

Here is your Sunday, September 9th, update on the Likely fire burning south of Alturas

The fire is located on Tule Mountain within the Wilderness Study Area. Approximately 3 miles south of the community of Likely on Hwy. 395.

As of this morning’s report from the BLM’s Southern California Interagency Incident Command Team #2, the Likely fire has burned approximately 9,800 acres and is 35 percent contained.

The Likely fire has been burning since September 5th and fuels are extremely dry and volatile.

Truett’s Southern California Incident Management Team assumed command of the fire this morning at 6 a.m. The Incident Command Post has been moved to South Fork Elementary School.

Crews are working to construct new fire line and continue improving line already built.

A Red Flag Warning has been issued for this area today and tomorrow because of low humidity and high winds.

Incident Priorities:

  • To provide for firefighter and public safety and protection of property
  • To keep local residents and the general public informed in a timely fashion
  • Fight fire aggressively while minimizing the impact of fire suppression
  • To protect cultural biological areas of concern
  • The fire is near the Modoc National Forest boundary, but there are no access limitations to the Blue Lake Campground or the South Warner Wilderness. Jess Valley Road is open.

    Hunters are asked to stay out of the fire area for their own safety.

    Fire restrictions are in effect on BLM and national forest lands, limiting campfires to developed and posted campgrounds and recreation sites. Vehicles must remain on established roads and trails.

    Weather and Fire Behavior

    The weather forecast calls for wind speeds up to 15 to 25 mph out of the Southwest, temperatures in the 80’s with a possible change to the West in the afternoon.
