Susan L Hart-Paulson, or as many of you know as Susie or Suzz, passed away from cancer in Reno, NV, on Thursday, September 4th, 2025.
Susie was born the first of four kids to Stan and Joyce Hart on March 1st, 1957, in Garberville, CA. Susie is preceded in death by both parents and her daughter Shelly Humphrey. She is survived by her siblings Ross Hart, Donna Hart, Dean Hart (Karol), nephews Ryan Hart, Rusty Hart, Mason Wolf, and their families.
At the age of four the family moved back to her fathers hometown of Covelo, CA and then to Westwood, CA, in 1966. It didn’t take but three years of heavy snow storms before her parents decided to move over the hill to Susanville in 1969.
In Susanville is where the family grew their roots. Susie, being a social person, didn’t waste time striking up friendships and bribing her dad into getting the horse he always promised her. Susie and her friends spent endless hours riding up past Hobo Camp, partaking in Honey Lake Valley Riders, and eventually joined FFA while attending Lassen High School. Susie and her wild bunch of friends never ceased to miss an opportunity for excitement and adventure. Well, eventually, that exciting life led her into marriage with Scott Humphrey and a daughter Shelly in 1974. That marital bond eventually disolved, and Susie was on to living her life as a single mom and looking for that place she belonged. Susie worked as a waitress for many years in Reno at the Shy Clown and the Sands before eventually deciding it was time to come back home.
Back in Susanville, Susie started classes at Lassen College and eventually was encouraged by her partner and later husband Robert (Bob) Paulson to go on to Chico State getting a business degree. After Susie’s time in Chico, she came back home and went to work at Lassen College in various departments including HR, then as the Admin Assistant to the President of Lassen College. Susie and Bob shared a life and love of the outdoors with deer hunting, fishing, going out to the desert rockhounding, having friends and family up to their home for their annual bar-b-que, their travels to Mexico with friends, and never forget the happy hours at Marions or the T&A. In time, Susie and Bob parted ways, and Susie journeyed out on her own again. She decided to pursue her interest in spirituality and natural healing. Some may remember her business, Health Wise where she offered Massages and Watsu Aquatic Therapy, until she endured life’s challenges that forced her to focus on her own health.
Susie loved gardening, sewing, and cooking; she was always seeking a new favorite recipe. Boy, could she cook up some delicious meals. If ever out and about in town and you came upon Susie, you would be greeted by a warm, welcoming smile and hug. Susie loved everyone!
For those who knew and loved Susie well, toast one up for her as she starts her new journey. Plant some sunflowers and peonies, hang a wind chime, or sit back with your favorite drink in hand while looking at the moon and stars….know that she is there!
