The National Weather Service is forecasting a large winter storm due to arrive in our region this afternoon. This storm will bring strong winds thru Thursday, with predicted sustained speeds of 40-50 and gusts of 60-70mph on the valley floor, and the 395 South corridor. These winds are predicted to last upwards of 18 hrs.
The precipitation forecast for the low elevations is 1-3 inches of rain, and a rain snow mix at the 6000-7500 foot elevations.
Flooding is not expected due to the dry soils, some localized flooding may occur due to the volume of rain, and the drainage systems being compromised.
With the winds and rain coupled with drought stressed trees we can almost assure power outages in the region which can last from a few hours to a few days.
The City of Susanville would like to take this opportunity to share some Winter Storm Safety reminders, and precautionary measures:
1. With the approaching winds, if you live on or near a waterway or drainage please secure all items that may be blown into the drainage system causing blockages that can lead to flooding items such as BBQs, tarps, yard furniture, and decorations.
Windblown items can cause damage to property, persons, or obstruct waterways and travel routes. Ash receptacles and bum piles should also be secured as a strong wind can revive small embers causing a fire.
2. Heavy precipitation/Snow. Be prepared for some localized flooding, have snow removal equipment available, have your vehicle prepared full of gas or fuel, and proper fitting tire chains.
3. Power outages. Although LMUD is not anticipating an outage with this storm you should always be prepared for extended power outages with provisions for heat, food, light, toiletries, travel (if necessary), and communications (radio tune to KSUE 1240 am dial, or KOH 780 am dial).
4. Prepare your home and family to be self- sufficient for 72hrs.
5. Remember when these storms affect our region they also affect the vital services of the community like Police, Fire, and Street crews. Although the City provides sufficient staffing, these crews can quickly become overwhelmed with service calls and emergencies, some delays may be experienced. Please help by being prepared and only requesting service if it is an emergency.
