The Susanville Indian Rancheria is inviting the entire community to celebrate cultural traditions at the 17th Annual Pow Wow, taking place this weekend from July 10th through July 12th. The multi-day event will be held at the Lassen County Fairgrounds in Susanville. The vibrant gathering is entirely open to the public, drug- and alcohol-free and perfect for families of all ages.
The spectacular Grand Entry processions officially kick off the dancing on Friday, at 7:00p.m., followed by two opportunities to watch on Saturday, July 11th at 1:00p.m. and 7:00p.m., before wrapping up with a final entry on Sunday, July 12th at 1:00p.m.
This year’s head staff features Fred Hill of Pendleton as the Master of Ceremonies and Jack Williams of Reno as the Arena Director. The powerful rhythms of the gathering will be provided by Host Drum Iron Bear, traveling from Canada and New Mexico. Attendees will also get to witness incredible dancing from Head Man Jordan Yazzie of Tacoma performing the Chicken Dance and Head Woman Sonnie Altaha of Walla Walla performing the Northern Traditional style.
Spectators can look forward to an array of exciting dance specials and competitions throughout the weekend. Highlights include the Jim Chapman Special, the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women Men & Women’s special, and a Men’s Fast & Fancy competition.
The arena will also host a Chicken Dance vs. Round Bustle showdown, both adult and youth Hand Drum contests, and a special Veteran’s category for males and females in regalia performing the Crow Hop and Sneak Up.
Families will also want to catch the Grandparent-Grandchild competition for ages 12 and under, which is proudly sponsored by Plumas Bank.
