The Susanville Police Department has released new details regarding a fatal officer-involved shooting that occurred early Wednesday morning.
The Incident
According to the update provided by Interim Public Safety Chief Allen Sobol, the ‘critical incident’ unfolded at approximately 12:25a.m. in the 300 block of Richmond Road.
Preliminary information indicates that two Susanville Police officers were involved in an encounter that quickly turned violent.
During the incident, one officer was reportedly attacked by an individual armed with a machete. In response to the attack, the officer discharged his service weapon.
Casualties and Injuries
Law enforcement and medical personnel on the scene immediately rendered aid to the subject; however, the individual succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
The officer involved in the struggle also sustained injuries during the machete attack. He was transported to Banner Lassen for treatment and has since been released.
Investigation and Protocol
The Lassen County Law Enforcement Interagency Investigation Team has been activated and remains “actively engaged” in a thorough, independent investigation.
“The Susanville Police Department recognizes the seriousness of this incident and the loss of life involved,” the department stated.
“We also acknowledge the impact these events have on everyone affected, including the family of the deceased, responding personnel and members of the community.”
Per standard department policy, the personnel involved have been placed on critical incident leave.
Transparency and Next Steps
The department confirmed that body-worn camera video of the encounter exists. Officials stated that the footage will be shared with the community once the investigation allows and the necessary review processes are complete.
As the investigation is in its early stages, investigators are continuing to process evidence and conduct interviews. The Susanville Police Department will provide further updates as more verified information becomes available.
